Welcome to the English Department!

English courses at MUC aim to boost students’ written and spoken capabilities. The department is one which seeks to provide for the language needs and requirements of the various majors offered at MUC. The department courses are divided into remedial courses and communication skills courses. Depending on the results of the English Placement Exam (EPE) students are placed into one of the English courses offered at the university.

Remedial courses are targeted at improving students English as a foreign language. This is done by focusing on the communicative competence of the students through the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). The communication skills courses provide students with the basics of various communication types and aims to enhance their higher order thinking skills, analytic abilities, and communicative competence. Overall the department’s main objective is to expand the English learning process and to develop linguistic confidence in our students.

Vision

Using interdisciplinary approach and modern pedagogies, the department facilitates MUC graduates’ abilities to view themselves as professionals within their chosen discipline, and provides them with the skills and abilities valued in the job market today. The department aims to balance the needs of general education - communication, diversity, and global perspectives - with those of the MUC schools.

Mission

The MUC English Department adheres to the philosophy that learning a language is a dynamic process that takes place over time with continual guidance and practice. The program endeavors to satisfy the requirements and diverse literacy needs of the MUC student body. It aims to educate students to use the four language skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening) as well as enhancing their overall critical thinking, and communication skills in any context, whether it is academic, professional, or social.
